DATE POSTED: Third 4th, 413

BODY: This is a callout for all freelancers. A family heirloom of Atheanian origin has been stolen from my estate. It is absolutely crucial that this heirloom is returned to me. The fate of the system depends on it.

===END DECRYPTED MESSAGE===

I wrote this primer when I wanted to figure out how to transform Athean, my primary world, into a sci-fi setting (still with magic though) from high fantasy. What better place to start than a hook? What would get players invested in this world the most would be to have their characters be a part of the worldbuilding process. As you’ll notice later, I leave plenty of room for the players to create their own planets and paths. Since the setting is sci-fi, pretty much anything goes!

You stumbled upon this post on one of the many forums you regularly follow. You’ve been looking for a job that’s actually worth your while, while still taking on a few minor tasks to pay the bills. You had heard somewhere that the trick to finding the most lucrative jobs was to check the postings with the least traffic, but that also means you have to go through a lot of crappy and spammy posts. Contrary to most posts you’ve seen, this one actually used real grammar – full words and punctuation and everything. So you kinda felt confident and responded directly as the post said.

Lo & behold, you immediately got a message back:

Past the asteroid belt is a special part of space that they call the Promethean Ring. It’s the shining center of civilization in this system, as weird as it may sound. A long, very long time ago, the ancestors of the peoples living in the Promethean Ring left their homeworlds in the Golden Ring in a mass exodus to find new homes. This is ancient history though, and no one really cares. There’s no reason to go back to the Golden Ring – all that’s left are ruins of a precursor civilization, from which your civilization has descended.

The gas giant Myrmidon is the closest to the old Golden Ring – so it’s as far away as you can get from the now thriving and prosperous worlds located in the Promethean Ring. Worlds such as Prosperity Prime and Mirai, but there’s a myriad of other planets too.

You’re from one of these planets. Which one?

Life in the Promethean Ring is generally good. But of course, you gotta work for it. Most people have regular old day-to-day jobs, but there are always more exciting opportunities for the more adventurous types.

They call these adventurous types freelancers. It’s not like they constitute a solid guild with a creed or anything. Each has their own reason why they do what they do. Some do it for the money. Others do it for the thrill of adventure. Some are forced into that life, left with no other choice.

Why are you a freelancer?

This might sound weird, but space travel is not exactly rocket science. Maybe it was thousands of years ago, but these days there are better ways to travel from planet to planet. Most freelancers, after completing a few years worth of local jobs, are able to afford a cheap jumper, which opens up more lucrative opportunities.

Land travel, on the other hand, is where the real fun begins. Each freelancer has their own method of transportation. Some go old school, opting for vehicles with wheels. Others like the smooth slide a speeder offers. And some simply use their jumpers to go around a planet. Not the most scenic route, but hey, it beats spending extra cash on a separate vehicle.

How do you get around?

Danger is always around the corner for freelancers, because not all jobs are equally legitimate in the eyes of the law. Goodie two-shoes freelancers tend to get paid less, but at least they don’t risk running into anything terrible. The more… lenient you are in terms of how dirty your hands might get, the easier it is to find cash fast. But hey, you know what they say. It’s only illegal if you get caught.

How far are you willing to go as a freelancer?

Lastly, freelancers come from all kinds of backgrounds. And, well, the universe is a weird place. People can conjure literal bolts of flame with a snap of their fingers, or set their swords on fire, or imbue the bullets from their guns with all sorts of elemental magic. There are more traditionally martial types as well, but one thing’s certain – every freelancer is well-trained and well-equipped. The ones who aren’t don’t last very long anyway.

What kind of freelancer are you? What’s your training like?
